the project
Buhurt is a modern take on medieval tournaments. The fighters wear full-body armor, which can be from different time periods and cultures. Every fighter chooses their own weaponry. The weapons are dull, but they get wielded with full force. There are different categories like duels, team fights, or MMA. The organizer determines the rules and makes sure they are followed. These are not show fights as you might know them from renaissance markets or theme parks.

how did you end up here?
In 2024 my boyfriend started that hobby, and when his club traveled to Switzerland for a tournament, I had the chance to meet them all. But since, as a casual visitor, events tend to overwhelm me quickly, I brought my camera along. This way I can focus my attention and I feel less weird around people.
a sense of community
The first impression of this sport is a weird one. It almost seems to be violent in spirit... So I do feel like I'm trying to fool you when I say most of them are just big history nerds. I've met male and female fighters and marshals (referees) from all over the world, and they really are just enjoying the hobby together. Sure, they have silly little jokes, but in the end it doesn't matter where you are coming from or if you have an accent... You are part of buhurt. They help each other out by fixing equipment, sharing snacks and water, or even filling up spots if the team needs one more fighter for their 5v5. Overall, a really special energy. I do hope I'm able to visit a tournament in China one day!
